The 10 Questions Every Selection Panel Asks
And the answer structure that ranks

First, the structure. This is 80% of it.
Every strong answer is one true story told in four beats: Situation (one sentence: where, when), Task (what needed doing), Action (what YOU did, "I" not "we"), and Result (what happened, with a number if it has one). Target 45 to 90 seconds. One specific story beats five general claims. If your answer would sound right coming out of a stranger's mouth, it is too vague to score.
The 10 questions
- "Why do you want to be an electrician, and not a plumber or a carpenter?"
Measuring whether you chose this trade or just a paycheck. "I like working with my hands" is what everyone says, so it scores nothing. Have a real origin: a person, a project, a job that pointed you here.
- "Walk me through your last two jobs. Why did each one end?"
Measuring reliability signals hidden in your history. Own every ending plainly, including the bad ones. Panels cross-check what you say against your application, and a dodge costs more than a layoff ever will.
- "It's 5:15 AM in February, sleeting, and the site is 45 minutes away. Walk me through your morning."
Measuring whether you have thought about the life. The scoring material is logistics: your alarm, your vehicle, your backup plan, and a real time you showed up when you had every excuse not to.
- "This program is five years, with class at night on top of full-time work. How does that fit your life?"
Measuring whether you understand the commitment or are about to discover it in year two. Name the commitment back to them and point at proof you have sustained something hard before.
- "Tell me about a time you had to work with someone you couldn't stand."
Measuring crew survival. Stay professional, name what YOU did to make the work happen anyway, and never trash the other person.
- "Describe the harshest feedback you've ever gotten. What did you do with it?"
Measuring ego. Apprentices take correction all day for years. Give a real criticism, taken without defensiveness, and one thing you actually changed.
- "Tell me about a time you saw something unsafe. What did you do?"
Measuring instinct, not code knowledge. A small true story beats a dramatic vague one. Bonus if you spoke up when it was awkward.
- "Year one is material handling, digging, and cleanup. How do you feel about that?"
Measuring whether you will quit when the romance wears off. Accept it plainly and prove it: the most physically miserable thing you have pushed through, with details.
- "How's your algebra?"
Measuring whether the classroom half will eat you. Be honest about where you are. If it's rusty, show the plan you are already running, not the plan you would hypothetically run.
- "Why should we take you over the next person through that door?"
The close. This is the one answer to prepare word for word, built from your specifics: your certs, your work record, your proof. One or two sentences, no bravado, then stop talking.
The follow-up is the real question.
Whatever you answer, the panel probes: "Give me a specific example." "What did YOU do, not the team?" This is where rank is actually set, and it is why memorized scripts collapse. Prepared applicants survive the probe because their stories are real. That is the whole trick.
